A Comparison of the Imagery of an Eschatological War in The War Scroll I,1-15 and 1 Thessalonians 5,1-11.

Description

In the War Scroll I,1-15 and 1 Thessalonians 5,1-11, almost the same eschatological imagery is created with words from the semantic domains of light and darkness, kinship, war, ethics, divinity and time. Although the constructed imageries in these texts look alike, their impact on the self-understanding of the respective Qumran and Thessalonian communities seems to have been different. This paper aims to reconstruct these imageries from the texts by using some terms from metaphor analysis, and to reconstruct the probable impact of these imageries on the self-understanding of the communities by utilizing some insights from sociolinguistics. From this perspective, the apparent difference in the impact of these imageries will be discussed. Although communities around the beginning of the era used almost the same imageries, the effect on group identity could be significantly different.
